<p>Pike Research’s John Gartner forecasts that global sales of hybrid and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span> will grow from 995,000 in 2011 to 2,870,000 in 2017. Half the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/hybrid-cars/" title="hybrid cars" target="_blank">hybrid cars</a></span> and all of the EVs will use lithium battery packs by 2017. In fact, the latest hybrid cars from Ford, Buick, Honda, Hyundai and Kai use lithium batteries not nickel-metal hydride (NiMH). In six years, cars with advanced batteries will triple and lithium automotive battery packs will grow over 100 fold. The forecast is only for light-duty passenger vehicles and does not include 16 million cars expected by 2015 to be start-stop vehicles (SSV).</p>
<p>Pike Research’s optimism was shared by others at <a href="http://infocastinc.com/index.php/conference/battery12">Infocast’s 10X Advanced Battery</a> meeting which I attended to hear presentations from Pike Research, other research groups, battery makers, auto makers, and venture capitalists.</p>
<p>John Gartner forecasts that automotive lithium battery revenue will grow from $2 billion in 2011 to $14.6 billion in 2017. Because battery-electric vehicles (BEV) use much larger packs than hybrid-electric (HEV), 2017 BEV revenue will be $10.8 billion, PHEV will be 3.2 billion, and HEV will be 0.6 billion.</p>
<p><a class="highslide" onclick="return vz.expand(this)" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Volt-IIHS-Front-Test.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2233" title="Volt IIHS Front Test" src="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Volt-IIHS-Front-Test.jpg" alt="Volt IIHS Front Test" width="220" height="157" /></a>Safety research continues. Much progress has been made in preventing lithium thermal runaways. In a crash test, the lithium battery in a Chevrolet Volt caught fire days after the crash. There have been no reported fires of actual owners including those involved in crashes. In contrast, there were over 180,000 fires in U.S. gasoline cars last year. The electric car alarmists continue to use their iPhones, Droids, iPads, and notebook computers that all use lithium batteries and do get dropped. We are not seeing a big demand for gasoline-powered smart phones.</p>
<p>Automotive lithium packs, including packaging, power electronics and thermal management, are forecast to drop from $752 per kilowatt hour (kWh) today to $523/kWh by 2017. At Clean Fleet Report, we speculate that automakers such as Tesla and Ford are already in that $500/kW ballpark today. Some are likely to reach $300/kW by 2020. Improved cell chemistry, <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/hybrid-cars/" title="hybrid car">hybrid car</a></span> demand, and manufacturing volume will drive prices lower.</p>
<h2>Will lithium batteries be a bubble like solar?</h2>
<p>Solar cells are over 100 times cheaper than in the 1970s. We will not see such price drops for lithium, but prices will keep falling. Solar price drops in 2011 were great for homeowners and business that bought <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/renewables/solar-energy-renewables/" title="solar power" target="_blank">solar power</a></span>, but the drops put several companies out of business. Solyndra met Darwin.</p>
<p>By 2017 it is possible that market share competition will lead to excess capacity and falling prices. Should that happen, packs would cost less than $500/kW. At the 10X meeting, patent attorney Matt Prater pointed out that Samsung, Panasonic, LG Chem, Toyota and Sony are leading in battery patents. The battle for market share is certain to be intense. Battery advancements for the automotive market will benefit stationary power and consumer electronics and vice versa.</p>
<p>Lithium is not the only game in town. Automakers continue to heavily use lead-acid batteries including improved chemistry for SSV. Many automakers, such as Toyota, continue to favor NiMH for hybrids for safety and cost reasons. Most electric cars use lithium batteries to supply the powertrain and lead-acid to support auxiliaries.</p>
<p>In this decade, lithium-ion is likely to dominate in electric and hybrid cars. The next decade is up in the air. Battery and automakers are actively researching solid-state batteries, magnesium, lithium-air and other metal air. General Motors is a stockholder in SAKTI3, which is making significant progress with solid-state technology that will lower battery size and cost. Toyota is actively researching magnesium, which is 24x cheaper than lithium and has better volumetric capacity. IBM and others are actively researching metal air batteries that could improve storage 10X with lithium-air. <a href="http://www.txchnologist.com/2012/what-do-we-need-from-the-battery-of-the-future-by-david-biello" target="_blank">David Biello of <em>Scientific American</em> </a>discusses alternatives such as flow batteries at Txchnologist.</p>
<p>Fuel cells are already commercialized in buses and forklifts. Several automakers plan to commercialize fuel-cell cars, crossovers, and SUVs in 2015 for fleets and consumers. This week I drove the Toyota FCHV, a Highlander SUV that uses a hydrogen fuel cell to extend the electric range to over 300 miles. The fuel cell works with the NiMH battery to supply electricity to the electric motor. I also drove the Mercedes B-Class F-CELL that extends electric range to 240 miles by utilizing a hydrogen fuel cell that works with its lii-ion battery. Both cars drove as smoothly and quietly as my <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/clean-fleet-articles/nissan-leaf-electric-car-price-review/" title="Nissan Leaf">Nissan Leaf</a></span>.</p>
<p>Hyundai is making 2,000 Tucson FCV. The hydrogen fuel cells in these SUVs integrate an ultracapacitor into the fuel cell. More future cars may integrate ultracapacitors with advanced batteries and fuel cells. Different energy storage technology can complement – fuel cells have more energy density, capacitors more power density, and lithium batteries are in the middle of the two. Fuel cells complement li-ion batteries to extend car range. In automobiles, the long-term threats to li-ion batteries are solid-state, magnesium, and metal air.</p>
<p>The <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/electric-cars-ev-plugin-hybrids-2011/" title="Top 10 Electric Cars" target="_blank">Top 10 Electric Cars</a></span> all use lithium-ion batteries to free drivers from stopping at gas stations. As electric and hybrid car competition intensifies, <a title="Automakers Lithium Batteries" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/automotive-lithium-batteries/">Nissan, GM, Toyota, and Ford are in a race to sell the most vehicles with lithium batteries</a>. In 2013, at least one of these automakers will sell over 100,000 cars with lithium battery packs. In the future, advancements in cell chemistry and manufacturing volume will allow more hybrids to achieve over 40 miles per gallon, extend the range of electric cars, and make these advanced cars affordable for millions.</p>

<p>The new Ford Fusion gives car owners unprecedented choice in powertrains and fuel economy. The Ford Fusion can be offered with an efficient EcoBoost engine or as a hybrid with better mileage than any midsized sedan or as a plug-in hybrid that allows many trips to use zero gasoline.</p>
<p>Classic styling, smooth driving, and excellent fuel economy come together in this new five-passenger midsized sedan. Market research revealed that 2 out of 3 U.S. shoppers, before buying, consider a midsized sedan, SUV, or liftback. One out of three buy a midsized sedan, according to Ford. The stakes are high. Safety and reliability perceptions are always a factor.</p>
<p>Ford saw Toyota Camry and Honda Accord sales decline starting when oil prices went over $100 per barrel, accelerate during the Great Recession, and take another hit during Japan’s earthquake and Thailand mudslide disasters. A shift from sedans to liftbacks and SUVs, both with more cargo flexibility, has been another factor. Fuel economy and car lifetime operating costs are important to many buyers.</p>
<p>The new Fusion Hybrid offers a breakthrough 47 miles per gallon (mpg) city and 44-mpg highway. The overall 46-mpg is 4 mpg better than the new <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/2012-toyota-camry-hybrid/" title="Toyota Camry Hybrid" target="_blank">Toyota Camry Hybrid</a></span>. The Fusion has a plug-in hybrid option, the Camry currently does not, but Clean Fleet Report predicts that one will be announced this year. Long term, Ford threatens to leapfrog Toyota’s hybrid leadership with a broad offering of pure battery-<span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span>, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids. Unlike Toyota, all 2013 Ford hybrids will use lithium batteries while Toyota primarily stays with nickel metal hydride batteries.</p>
<p>Ford is now in a race with the Renault-Nissan Alliance to be first to sell 100,000 cars in one year with lithium batteries and electric motors. Either or both will achieve this in 2013. In the process they are driving down the cost of lithium batteries, electric motors, and advanced power electronics, making hybrid and electric cars more affordable.</p>
<h2>2013 Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid</h2>
<p>Arriving this fall, Fusion Energi is anticipated to deliver more than 100 MPGe, a mile per gallon equivalency metric for electrified vehicles. This is 8 MPGe more than the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/chevrolet-volt-test-drive-best-electric-car/" title="Chevrolet Volt">Chevrolet Volt</a></span> and 13 MPGe more than the projected efficiency of the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/toyota-prius-plugin-crossover-city-car/" title="Toyota Prius">Toyota Prius</a></span> plug-in hybrid model. Many Volt owners tell me that in real world driving their first 40 miles are electric mode before the gasoline engine engages.</p>
<p>The Fusion Energi is expected to deliver 20 to 30 miles in electric mode, provided the driver stays below 62 miles per hour. The average American drives 4 trips daily with 40-miles per total. City streets and stop-go freeway are much of that driving. The Energi will support Level One and Level Two charging. Go fast, or use most of the lithium battery storage and the Energi drives like a hybrid with its electric motor and 2 liter, 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine working together. An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) helps fuel economy.</p>
<p>We will learn more about electric range, motor and battery specs as Ford starts sales in Fall 2012. Sales will start shortly after sales of the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/clean-fleet-articles/ford-focus-ev-nissan-leaf-best-electric-car/" title="Ford Focus Electric">Ford Focus Electric</a></span> and the Ford C-Max Plug-in Hybrid crossover. Ford is expected to make battery packs but use different cell chemistry for pure-electrics, plug-in hybrids and hybrids. Compact Power, a subsidiary of LG Chem, will supply the lithium-ion tri-metal cells and packs for the 2013 Ford Focus Electric.</p>
<h2>2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid</h2>
<p><a class="highslide" onclick="return vz.expand(this)" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Ford-Fusion-Hybrid-interior-37k.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2460" title="Ford Fusion Hybrid interior 37k" src="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Ford-Fusion-Hybrid-interior-37k.jpg" alt="Ford Fusion Hybrid interior" width="216" height="144" /></a>The Fusion Hybrid – 2010 North American Car of the Year – continues to innovate with new lithium-ion batteries that save 50 percent battery weight, 30 percent size, and generate more power than previous nickel-metal hydride batteries, while raising maximum speed under electric-only power from 47 mph to 62 mph before the engine engages allowing much greater speed. Even with a smaller battery-pack, however, the Hybrid and Energi only offer 12 cubic-feet of trunk space. The non-hybrid fusion is over 15 and the back seat can be lowered for much more cargo.</p>
<p>Fusion Hybrid also features an all-new 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine, significantly downsized from the previous 2.5-liter unit while maintaining performance standards. This innovative powertrain is anticipated to deliver best-in-class fuel economy of 47 mpg in city driving and 44 mpg on the highway.</p>
<p>Fusion Hybrid fuel economy stands to outperform the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid by 4 mpg city and 5 mpg highway and the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid by 12 mpg and 4 mpg, respectively. The Fusion Hybrid is one of the <a title="Top 10 Hybrid Cars" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/best-hybrid-car-mpg/" target="_blank">top 10 hybrid cars</a>.</p>
<h2>2012 Fusion Achieves 32 MPG and Optional <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/2011-awd-4wd-mpg/" title="AWD">AWD</a></span></h2>
<p>Fusion brings the broadest selection of fuel-efficient powertrains in the midsize car segment. It offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid alternatives, a pair of EcoBoost™ four-cylinder engines, a normally aspirated four-cylinder engine, an automatic start stop system to shut off the engine at stationary idle, front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (AWD) applications, and a choice between automatic and manually shifted six-speed transmissions.</p>
<p>The 1.6-liter EcoBoost outperforms many larger 6-cylinder engines with non-hybrid fuel efficiency of 26 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, 32 mpg combined. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine – paired with a paddle-shifted six-speed SelectShift Automatic™ transmission, available 19-inch wheels and tires, and all-wheel drive with the ability to send additional torque to the rear – is the Fusion performance option.</p>
<h2>Safety Technology and Telematics</h2>
<p>The all-new Fusion offers an unprecedented portfolio of driver assistance and convenience technologies based on sensors, cameras and radar that enable the car to see and respond. Fusion can help drivers maintain proper lane position, adjust vehicle speed to changing traffic conditions, identify suitable parking spaces and help park, even aiding drivers backing out of parking space where visibility is obstructed. Specific technologies include:</p>
<ul>
<li>    Lane Keeping System: 3 elements to help a driver maintain proper lane position. Using a small, forward-facing camera behind the inside rearview mirror, the system “looks” down the road, monitoring lane lines to determine that the car is on course. The system will alert a driver if drowsiness or erratic lane-keeping is detected. The second element warns a driver with a steering wheel vibration if the Fusion drifts too close to lane markings. Finally, lane keeping aid will actually apply pressure on the steering to help bring the car back into proper lane position.</li>
<li>    Adaptive cruise control: Using forward-looking radar, this system “looks” down the road when activated, slowing the Fusion when slower traffic is detected ahead. Adaptive cruise control enables collision warning with brake support to help slow the car if the potential of a crash is detected.</li>
<li>    Active park assist: Employing sensors, this technology can identify a suitable parallel parking space, calculate the trajectory and steer the car to properly position it within the spot. All a driver need do is operate accelerator and brake pedals.</li>
<li>    Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with cross-traffic alert: Sensors in both Fusion rear quarter-panels are able to detect traffic in a driver’s blind spot, providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic – unseen by the driver – is detected. BLIS technology enables cross-traffic alert, warning the driver of oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space with obstructed views.</li>
</ul>
<p>Fusion is designed with customer safety in mind. Engineers increased its body strength by 10 percent, using more high-strength steels such as boron, and added dual first-row knee airbags and adaptive front airbags that vent and tether to conform to a specific occupant’s size, position and seatbelt usage.</p>
<p>The Fusion safety team targeted top-of-the-line ratings in each public domain safety benchmark, including National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ratings, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick and top ratings in world markets where the car will be sold.</p>
<p>The new Fusion offers the latest iteration of Ford’s SYNC® communications and entertainment system, which enables voice-activated communication through a driver’s mobile phone and interaction with the car’s audio system. Fusion also offers the latest version of MyFord Touch®, allowing a driver to interact with vehicle systems through voice control, touch screen, or conventional button.</p>
<p>Both SYNC and MyFord Touch – powered by SYNC – help reduce the potential for driver distraction through voice-controlled functionality, allowing drivers to keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.</p>
<h2>Lincoln MKZ Concept with New Hybrid and AWD Options</h2>
<p>The improved hybrid drive system is likely to improve mileage in a future Lincoln MKZ. On display at the Auto Show is the new Lincoln MZK Concept that can use multiple powertrain options including hybrid drive with FWD or AWD.</p>
<p>The Lincoln MKZ Concept’s four-seat interior is open, warm and inviting. “The front graphic is repeated in the dramatic sweep of the instrument panel, helping tie the interior to the exterior. These flowing forms create a comfortable and functional interior that particularly appeals to the younger, more diverse customers we are targeting,” said Wolff.</p>
<p>Innovative interior features include push-button transmission gear selection, an open, tiered center console and liquid crystal instrumentation. The reconfigurable 10.1-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD positioned ahead of the driver operates with the latest version of MyLincoln Touch™ as does the nearly flush-mounted center 8-inch LCD touch screen.</p>

<p>The Renault-Nissan Alliance and Better Place have signed an agreement to create a mass market for electric vehicles in Israel, an excellent target market for 5 reasons: (1) sales tax exceeds 60 percent for gasoline vehicles, (2) gasoline costs over $6 per gallon, (3) most driving distances fit the range of electric vehicles, (4) the nation does not want to be dependent on foreign oil, and (5) electric vehicles have strong government support.</p>
<p>Better Place plans to deploy a massive network of battery-charging spots. Driving range will no longer be an obstacle because customers will be able to plug their cars into charging units in any of the 500,000 charging spots in Israel. An on-board computer system will indicate to the driver the remaining power supply and the nearest charging spot. Nissan, through its joint venture with Japanese electronic giant NEC, has created a battery pack that meets the requirements of the electric vehicle and will produce it in mass volume.</p>
<p>As part of the solution, the Israeli government will provide tax incentives to customers, Renault will supply the electric vehicles, and Better Place will construct and operate an electric recharge grid across the entire country. Shai Agassi, CEO of Better Place, predicts that Israel will have over 100,000 electric vehicles in use by 2011. Although his forecast was not achieved in 2011, it is a realistic target. This will be 5 percent of the nation’s vehicle population. The number represents a significant step towards energy independence.</p>
<p>Denmark has agreed to a similar plan. Several United States cities are in early discussions with Better Place. For cities and nations that do not want to depend exclusively on a network of charging stations, Better Place offers an exciting alternative. Just as wireless service providers offer subscription plans with phones at discounted prices, Better Place partnerships may offer discounted electric vehicles with usage pricing plans. Annual use of an EV should be less than the average cost of $8,000 per year in the United States for using a gasoline-powered car.</p>
<p>Is Shai Agassi some idealist who is dreaming the impossible dream? Is he tilting at imaginary windmills? Hardly. Better Place has received over $200 million of venture capital investment. Agassi was a top executive at SAP, a corporation that became a global leader in enterprise software, successfully competing with giants Oracle and IBM.</p>
<p>Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan and Renault, is noted for his financial discipline and corporate turnaround success. He is investing in the future. He sees some markets where his vehicles will be sold without batteries. The batteries will be leased by providers or where the entire electric vehicle will be part of a “subscription plan” such as Better Place.</p>
<p>A convergence of forces including unpredictable oil prices, improved batteries, congestion fees in major cities, and a growing middle class in Asia will cause the rapid expansion from 40 million electric vehicles to over 100 million globally. Today, these vehicles are predominately e-bikes and low-speed electric vehicles. By late 2010, however, you will be able to buy or lease a freeway-speed electric vehicle with a range exceeding 100 miles.</p>
<p>There is a major shift to electric propulsion. In Asia it is widely seen in electric bikes and e-scooters. In the United States, the first wave of popularity has been hybrid electric vehicles using advanced batteries and electric motors that assist smaller gasoline engines. In the United States today, inexpensive electric vehicles are limited to community driving and lack freeway speed and range. Not for long.</p>
<p>If you drive 10,000 miles per year, then you are only driving an average of 27 miles per day. In fact, 80 percent of the time, a United States driver does not exceed 40 miles in one day. Since most United States households have two vehicles, one of their cars could be powered only with electricity.</p>
<p>Yesterday, families and friends insisted that every vehicle be ready to go hundreds of miles on a moment’s notice and be big enough for the heaviest load of the year. Today, people realize that one vehicle can be used to travel 100 miles daily without needing a drop of gasoline. By the end of 2010, consider buying or leasing an <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric car">electric car</a></span>.</p>

<h2>CODA New Price of $39,995 with 50% Larger Lithium Battery</h2>
<p>My test drive of the new CODA showed that this new <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric car">electric car</a></span> is similar in handling and performance to the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/clean-fleet-articles/nissan-leaf-electric-car-price-review/" title="Nissan Leaf">Nissan Leaf</a></span> and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/clean-fleet-articles/ford-focus-ev-nissan-leaf-best-electric-car/" title="Ford Focus Electric">Ford Focus Electric</a></span> which I have also driven. CODA has at least 40 percent more electric range than the LEAF and Focus Electric which each have 24 kW lithium batteries in comparison to CODA&#8217;s 36 kW lithium iron phosphate battery. Battery size isn’t everything, but it’s a lot when driving an electric car 80 miles on the freeway and wondering if you will get home. Even with Nissan and Ford’s Eco modes, slightly lighter weight, and advanced engineering, CODA is likely to offer 40 percent more electric range.</p>
<p>For the past six months, my wife and I have been delighted with driving our LEAF. We have experienced 120 mile range on quiet streets going 30 mph, but on the freeway at 65, we starting worrying after driving 60 miles. For longer trips, we use our second car which is a hybrid. With the CODA we could have made some trips that were not possible or practical with the LEAF. CODA gives their car a target range of 150 miles per electric car in comparison to 100 for the LEAF or Focus Electric.</p>
<p>These 3 <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span> support the Level 2 standard for charging. CODA and Ford charge at 6.6 kW/h, double the speed of the 2012 Nissan LEAF. This speed rarely matters at home, but when using a public charger it can make the difference between working at a nearby Starbucks for one hour instead of two. Since there are over 10,000 public chargers installed in the U.S., I’ve had great personal luck finding and using public chargers but double the charge speed would be great. The 2013 Nissan LEAF will match the Ford and CODA 6.6 kW/h.</p>
<p>Unlike the CODA, the current LEAF also includes a DC Fast Charge which offers an 80 percent charge in 26 minutes, or a lot less if you’re battery is only partially depleted. Nissan’s Mark Perry tells me that there are over 500 DC Fast Chargers planned for installation, but only a few in states like Oregon currently operational.</p>
<p>CODA is a four-door compact sedan that comfortably holds 5 people. It no more calls attention to itself than a Camry or Civic. With 14 cubic feet, it has more trunk space than competitors such as the LEAF, Volt, and Focus Electric, and much more than the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/electric-vehicles/charging-electric-vehicles/mitsubishi-i-review-price/" title="Mitsubishi i" target="_blank">Mitsubishi i</a></span>. The competition however is five-door hatchbacks. Lower their backseats and plenty of cargo space is available when only traveling with two or three people.</p>
<p>My test drive car CODA costs about $41,400 because it included air conditioning. The interior is nice but not as nicely appointed as competition from Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet and others. It doesn’t have all the infotainment and telematics, but it probably has all the features of your current sedan. Like other cars with the instant torque of an electric motor, I had no problem accelerating around slower cars and maneuvering through hectic LA traffic. The CODA is certainly worth a test drive if you are considering an electric car and want more range.</p>
<h2>CODA Corporate Overview</h2>
<p>A car buyer wants some reassurances that a car company will be around as long as their 8 year lithium battery warranty. CODA’s past struggles with multiple changes of the CEO, difficulty to secure financing, and years of delay in manufacturing will cause some to buy from Nissan, Ford, and others.</p>
<p>CODA tells me that they are starting manufacturing. Then again, they told me that two years ago. A few cars are planed for delivery to their investors by year end. In 2012 Q1 deliveries to fleets like Enterprise Car Rental and SDG&amp;E are expected. By mid-year consumer deliveries should be underway.</p>
<p>CODA Holdings is a privately held American company that designs, manufactures and sells all electric vehicles and battery systems. CODA’s initial vehicle, the CODA Sedan, a four-door, five-passenger all-electric vehicle with a range of up to 150 miles per charge.</p>
<p>Phil Murtaugh, CEO of CODA Holdings, comes from GM with extensive automotive executive experience. CODA headquarters/design/engineering center are in Los Angeles, California for its 225 employees.</p>
<p>Investors are made up of large institutional investors and high net worth individuals including former U.S. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson. CODA has global joint-venture with Lishen Power Battery, a global battery cell supplier to Samsung, Motorola and Apple, for the design, manufacture and sale of battery systems called Lishen CODA Energy Systems. Together, CODA and Lishen developed a lithium iron phosphate battery cell for transportation and utility applications including renewable energy (wind and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/renewables/solar-energy-renewables/" title="solar power" target="_blank">solar power</a></span>) storage.</p>
<p>To reduce the capital intensive nature of the automotive industry, CODA controls all core vehicle design and engineering work internally while partnering with a global network of established manufacturers and suppliers. In total, CODA has more than thirty suppliers and partners on four continents. CODA’s supply chain partners include BorgWarner, UQM Technologies, Energy CS, Continental Automotive Systems, Porsche Design Studios, Delphi, Celgard, Novolyte Technologies, OMITEC, Lear and HELLA.</p>

<p>The 2013 Spark EV is Chevrolet’s new 100% battery-<span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric car">electric car</a></span>. It is GM’s fourth electric car model that includes the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/chevrolet-volt-test-drive-best-electric-car/" title="Chevrolet Volt">Chevrolet Volt</a></span>, the Opel Ampera, and the Cadillac ELR. GM needs a pure-electric offering; <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/clean-fleet-articles/nissan-leaf-electric-car-price-review/" title="Nissan Leaf">Nissan Leaf</a></span> is dominating the early adopter market.</p>
<p>Reuters reports that Nissan LEAF&#8217;s sales through September were about 27,500 &#8212; seven times higher than the Volt. Electric utility PG&amp;E confirms that ratio reporting 1,200 LEAFs and only 250 Volts delivered in its service area – <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/cities/san-francisco-electric-car-charging/" target="_blank">10,000 electric cars for SF Region</a> in 2012. GM is expanding electric car production from 10,000 this year to 65,000 in 2012 as it plays catch-up with Nissan and prepares for market share battle with Ford, Toyota, Honda, and others.</p>
<p>Now GM fights back with the Spark EV. A gasoline powered Spark is currently offered in some foreign markets and will be sold next year in the U.S. as a 5-door, 4-seat, subcompact hatchback. Small cars are now popular in American cities as drivers fight for expensive parking spaces. In 2012, the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/electric-vehicles/charging-electric-vehicles/mitsubishi-i-review-price/" title="Mitsubishi i" target="_blank">Mitsubishi i</a></span> will lead the battle for electric city cars with a starting price of $29,195.</p>
<p>By the time that Chevrolet can start dealer deliveries of the 2013 Spark EV, it will face tough competition from at least <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/clean-fleet-articles/electric-cars-lowest-prices/" target="_blank">10 electric cars in the U.S. selling for under $40,000</a>.  The field will include other impressive <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span> such as the Nissan LEAF, which I own, the Mitsubishi I, the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/clean-fleet-articles/ford-focus-ev-nissan-leaf-best-electric-car/" title="Ford Focus Electric">Ford Focus Electric</a></span>, the Honda Fit Electric, the Scion IQ EV and others. Chevrolet only plans on limited sales in California and other select U.S. and global markets in 2013. GM has yet to announce useable battery size, range, fast charge capability or lack thereof and vehicle price. Electric car ranges of 80 to 100 miles are common.</p>
<p>Both the Chevrolet Spark EV and the Chevrolet Volt will be successful. Many people prefer the plug-in hybrid range of the Volt; others want a zero gasoline pure electric like the Spark and will count on the 25,000-plus public charging stations that will be available when the Spark EV is delivered. I have <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/electric-vehicles/charging-electric-vehicles/jackson-browne-chevrolet-volt/" target="_blank">interviewed dozens of Volt drivers</a> from music stars like Jackson Brown to regular commuters. They uniformly love their cars performance, reliability, and electric range.</p>
<h2>Lithium Battery Competition – A123 Wins this Time</h2>
<p>The Chevy Spark is a major win for the nanophosphate lithium-ion battery pack supplier A123, an American innovator that has lost most automotive design-wins to giants like Korea’s LG Chem and Samsung and Japan’s Panasonic and NEC. (Disclosure: author holds modest stock ownership in A123.)</p>
<p>As electric and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/hybrid-cars/" title="hybrid car">hybrid car</a></span> competition intensifies, Nissan, GM, Toyota, and Ford are in a race to sell the most vehicles with lithium batteries. I have driven cars from each of these automakers that use lithium batteries. The cars performed beautifully and delivered great fuel economy.</p>
<p>By the end of 2012, Nissan will have delivered 100,000 LEAFs. Renault is trying to match that number in Europe and Israel. Both automakers use AESC lithium-nickel-manganese polymer batteries. AESC is a joint venture between NEC and Nissan.</p>
<p>Ford may be the first carmaker to sell 100,000 cars annually that includes lithium batteries. When I lasted interviewed Nancy Gioia, Director Ford Global Electrification, she said that Ford has a 2020 goal of 10 to 25 percent of its vehicle sales including lithium batteries. Her best guess is that 70% would be hybrids, 20 to 25% plug-in hybrids, and 5 to 10% battery-electric. Everything from technology innovation to oil prices will affect the future mix.</p>
<p>Toyota Motor Corp is bringing to market three vehicles with lithium batteries – the Prius PHV, the RAV4 EV, and the Scion IQ EV.</p>

<p>Lithium batteries are everywhere. They are in your mobile phones, iPads, notebook computers, game players, music players, and a lot more. Soon lithium batteries will be in millions of hybrid and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span>.</p>
<p>As electric and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/hybrid-cars/" title="hybrid car">hybrid car</a></span> competition intensifies, Nissan, GM, Toyota, and Ford are in a race to sell the most vehicles with lithium batteries. I have driven cars from each of these automakers that use lithium batteries. The cars performed beautifully and delivered great fuel economy.</p>
<h3>Nissan will be First with 100,000 Freeway Speed Electric Cars</h3>
<p><a class="highslide" onclick="return vz.expand(this)" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/LEAF-battery.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1897" title="Nissan LEAF battery" src="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/LEAF-battery-150x150.jpg" alt="Nissan LEAF battery" width="150" height="150" /></a>Over 20,000 Nissan LEAFs have been delivered globally, putting Nissan ahead of the competition in the electric car race. My wife and I took delivery of our LEAF in late April and have enjoyed driving it ever since. Nissan backlog grows as it expands sales to more states. Nissan is currently constrained to making 50,000 LEAFs per year to by production from one plant in Japan.</p>
<p>Nissan will deliver 50,000 LEAFs in 2012. They heroically recovered after Japan’s tragic earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdowns. As part of the Renault-Nissan alliance, the lithium battery numbers are much higher. In 2013, a new plant opens in Tennessee with the ultimate capacity of 150,000 LEAFs per year plus 200,000 lithium battery packs per year.</p>
<p>Nissan’s Mark Perry, Director of Product Planning, “Electrification of transportation is no longer an ‘if’ rather a when. Most manufacturers have active programs in HEV, PHEV,EV and FC. New 2025 CAFE regulations will require more advanced technology deployment to achieve 54.5 targets than today. Nissan forecasts 10% market share will be pure EV by 2020.”</p>
<p>The LEAF lithium-nickel-manganese polymer battery packs are produced by AESC, a joint venture of Nissan and NEC. The new Nissan hybrid system uses the same AESC li-ion design as the LEAF with fewer kilowatts being needed. By switching from NiMH batteries to li-ion, weight can be removed from the vehicle. A wider state-of-charge with lithium can also improve mileage. All 2012 Nissan <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/hybrid-cars/" title="hybrid cars" target="_blank">hybrid cars</a></span> use lithium batteries including the Altima Hybrid and the Infinity M35H.</p>
<h3>General Motors Leads with Plug-in Hybrids</h3>
<p><a class="highslide" onclick="return vz.expand(this)" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Chevrolet-volt-36k.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2065" title="Chevrolet volt 36k" src="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Chevrolet-volt-36k-150x150.jpg" alt="Chevy VOLT" width="150" height="150" /></a>General Motors and LG Group are jointly designing and engineering future electric vehicles, expanding a relationship built on LG’s work as the battery cell supplier for the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera extended-range EVs. The GM-LG joint development will expand the number and types of electric vehicles that GM makes and sells by using LG’s proven expertise in batteries and other systems. In 2012, GM will deliver at least 60,000 Volts and Amperas with LG Chem advanced lithium battery cells.</p>
<p>“Many solutions for tomorrow’s transportation needs may be available more quickly by building on our partnership strategy,” said GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky. ”Consumers benefit by getting the latest fuel-saving technology faster if we work with the best suppliers and we save time and money in the development process.”</p>
<p>The success of the extended-range propulsion system in the Volt and Ampera led to exploring other collaborations in the electrification of the automobile. Teams of LG and GM engineers will work on key components, as well as vehicle structures and architectures. Vehicles resulting from the partnership will be sold in many countries.</p>
<p>The GM-LG relationship that began with LG delivering the cells for the battery pack of the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/chevrolet-volt-test-drive-best-electric-car/" title="Chevrolet Volt">Chevrolet Volt</a></span> and Opel Ampera expanded last year with work on a demonstration fleet of Chevrolet Cruze electric vehicles. These vehicles were used as official vehicles of the G20 summit in Seoul are now in the phase of market-testing to learn more about capabilities and requirements.</p>
<p>GM is not putting all of its eggs in one basket. The new pure-electric 2013 Chevrolet Spark EV will use A123 lithium-ion nanophosphate prismatic cells.</p>
<h3>Ford Switching to Lithium Batteries for All Hybrids</h3>
<p><a class="highslide" onclick="return vz.expand(this)" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FORD-C-MAX-ENERGI.jpeg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2075" title="FORD C-MAX ENERGI" src="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FORD-C-MAX-ENERGI-150x150.jpg" alt="FORD C-MAX ENERGI" width="150" height="150" /></a>Ford will only use lithium batteries in all 2013 model Ford hybrids which start selling in the middle of calendar year 2012. Ford is currently second only to Toyota in global hybrid sales, thanks to vehicles like the Escape Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid.</p>
<p>Although the Renault-Nissan Alliance is most likely to be first with 100,000 lithium-battery cars, Ford may be the first car maker to sell 100,000 cars annually that includes lithium batteries. <p>Ford Motor is admired for refusing bailout money and returning to strong profitability. Ford’s electrification plans have the potential for better profit margins as it builds many vehicles for the global market on a common platform. For example, we will see a growing number of hybrid and electric vehicles on the C platform including the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/clean-fleet-articles/ford-focus-ev-nissan-leaf-best-electric-car/" title="Ford Focus Electric">Ford Focus Electric</a></span>, Transit Connect Electric, and new <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/ford-cmax-plugin-hybrid/">C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi</a>.</p>
<p>With the C-MAX, we will see that Ford powersplit hybrids and blended plug-in hybrids share about 85 percent of the same components including electric traction motor, generator, inverters, DC/DC converters, electric accessories, transmission, and engine. Both the C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid models, with a common chassis, will be built alongside the all-new 2012 Ford Focus and Focus Electric at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich.</p>
<p>Ford, however, will use different pack design and cell chemistry for its hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery-electric. While some of Ford’s competitors focus on joint ventures with a single battery company, Ford controls pack design and assembly. Different cell manufacturers are considered for different vehicles. Lithium cell providers include LG Chem/Compact Power (CPI) for the Ford Focus Electric and Johnson Control for the Transit Connect Electric.</p>
<h3>Toyota’s Incremental Approach to Plug-in Hybrids and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric car">electric car</a></span></h3>
<p><a class="highslide" onclick="return vz.expand(this)" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Prius-PHV-2010-Addison-61K.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2169" title="Prius PHV 2010 Addison 61K" src="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Prius-PHV-2010-Addison-61K-150x150.jpg" alt="Toyota Prius PHV" width="150" height="150" /></a>Toyota Motor Corp is bringing to market four vehicles with lithium batteries – the Prius PHV, the RAV4 EV, the Scion IQ EV, and rumors of a Camry Plug-in Hybrid. These electric vehicles give Toyota a shot at selling 100,000 vehicles with lithium batteries in 2013, but Toyota is not likely to be first with 100,000. It will be Nissan, GM or Ford.</p>
<p>Toyota has over 3 million hybrids on the road with NiMH batteries. Why fight success? Toyota will be careful in switching to lithium-ion. Economics, reduced vehicle weight, and more interior room will eventually make the switch compelling.</p>
<p>Toyota is not afraid to partner with potential competitors if it accelerates time to market for the right vehicles. Toyota, which owns 2 percent of Tesla, contracted with Tesla for lithium battery packs and drive system integration for the new Toyota RAV4 EV. Toyota has a long history with battery giants Panasonic and Sanyo. Recently, Toyota and Ford announced that they would equally collaborate in the development of advanced hybrid systems for rear-wheel drive trucks and SUVs.</p>
<h3>Clean Fleet Report Forecasts One Million Vehicles with Lithium Batteries</h3>
<p>Production of electrified vehicles is gearing up all over the world, and automakers are planning to launch an increasing variety of new models over the next few years.  Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will all share the market stage as electrified vehicles continue to capture a larger portion of the total vehicle market.</p>
<p>Clean Fleet Report forecasts that in 2014 over one million vehicles will be sold with lithium battery packs and electric motors as demand grows for electric cars and hybrids. With manufacturing volume and technology improvements, lithium battery pack costs continue to drop. Three years ago, automaker pack costs were around $1,000/kW. Today, they are around $500. By 2020, they could be at $250/kWh. If oil prices rise, we could see the tipping point in this decade where electric cars are less expensive than gasoline and diesel powered cars.</p>
<p>According to a new report from Pike Research, cumulative sales of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), the category that includes both PHEVs and BEVs, will reach 5.2 million units by 2017, up from just under 114,000 vehicles in 2011.  By the same year, cumulative sales of HEVs will represent an additional 8.7 million vehicles, for a combined total of 13.9 million units in all electrified vehicle categories.</p>
<p>Energy storage is a $30 billion industry with steady growth. Michigan is now home to 17 advanced battery companies in various stages of construction and production, representing nearly $6 billion in capital investment and expected to create an estimated 20,000 new direct jobs over the next 10 years. The state is expected to make approximately 20 percent of the world&#8217;s lithium ion batteries. <a href="www.thebatteryshow.com">The Battery Show</a> will be held October 25-27 in Novi, Michigan.</p>
<p>Some automakers want to be first to market with electric cars and advanced batteries; others want to be first to volume. As Nissan, GM, Toyota, Ford, and other automakers compete for hybrid and electric car leadership we will continue to see technological advancements and cost reduction in advanced batteries, electric motors, and electric drive system components. The race is on and the car driver is the sure winner.</p>

GM is moving ahead with the dramatic luxury coupe, shown two years ago as the Cadillac Converj Concept.</p>
<p>The Cadillac ELR will use the electric drive system of the popular <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/chevrolet-volt-test-drive-best-electric-car/" title="Chevrolet Volt">Chevrolet Volt</a></span>. Cadillac drivers will now be able to drive 40 miles on an electric charge from home, work, or charge stations, then go hundreds of added miles when the gasoline engine is engaged. Like the Volt, the Cadillac ELR is a plug-in hybrid with an efficient gasoline engine that normally acts as an electric generator, but at some speeds blends power with the electric motor.</p>
<p>When I took the Volt on a long drive down California’s Pacific Coast Highway, the handling was smooth. The Volt hugged the road through sharp turns. In the hills, the 150-hp electric motor easily climbed steep grades. The existing Volt electric motor and 1.4L gasoline engine could handle the added weight expected for the Cadillac ELR, but GM may decide on a slightly larger engine and/or motor. Stay tuned as the Cadillac is a concept car that is likely to go on sale as a 2013 or 2014 production car.</p>
<h2>GM to Deliver 65,000 <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span> in 2012</h2>
<p>At a recent Volt owner meeting, a GM manager told me that GM will build 65,000 electric cars next year, as it scrambles to meet customer demand. He said that 40,000 would be Chevrolet Volts and 20,000 Opel Amperas for Europe. I asked about the other 5,000. He said, “Good question. I’ll have to look into that.” Good question, evasive answer. Perhaps the other 5,000 will be a 2013 Cadillac ELR.</p>
<p>GM also admits to working on 32 different vehicles with electric drive systems.  Not all will be commercialized. Some models will be selected over others. GM will build on the success of the Volt and Ampera, which share its Voltec drive system and lithium batteries.</p>
<p>The Volt and Ampera use GM battery packs containing the LG Chem manganese spinel li-polymer prismatic battery cells. The Cadillac ELR, however, may use A123 nanophosphate lithium ion cells in a new pack. A123 is supplying the batteries for the new luxury high-performance Fisker plug-in hybrids. Cells for the new Cadillac are likely be made at A123’s Livonia, Michigan plant. The new Cadillac, right down to its advanced batteries, is made in America.</p>
<h2>Easy to Drive, Easy to Charge</h2>
<p>The Cadillac ELR will feature an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. It uses electricity as its primary source to drive the car without using gasoline or producing emissions. When the battery’s energy is low, the ELR seamlessly switches to extended-range mode to enable driving for hundreds of additional miles.</p>
<p>The Cadillac ELR can be charged through the standard 110 volt outlet found in most garages. It can also be charged at thousands of employer and public J1772 Level 2 chargers.</p>
<p>Volt and ELR customers can also use the new GM Voltec Level 2 Charger, sold for only $499. GM has achieved the low price by eliminating redundant smart charging electronics in the EVSE and letting the vehicle manage charging. The ELR will have on-board smart charging which can be managed through the vehicle display, the internet, or with smart phones using a GM OnStar Mobile App.</p>
<p>I was quite impressed with the OnStar App which gives Volt owners the ability to remotely check the battery charge level, available range, tire pressure, remote lock and unlock, and even activate the remote start to heat or cool the interior to your preferred temperature. Navigate the interactive screens of the app, and you can change how and when you want your Volt to charge. You can even set up alerts via text or email to remind you to plug in your Volt, when charging is complete or if charging has been interrupted. The app also provides a single button to access a Volt Customer Advisor who can answer vehicle-specific questions.</p>
<p>Like the Volt, the Cadillac ELR may offer three unique driving modes to accommodate different driving styles. Normal mode is the most efficient setting that takes the electricity and focuses it on operating the electric drive. Sport mode sacrifices a small amount of efficiency for more responsive acceleration, and Mountain mode makes sure the battery has a bigger energy reserve for driving up long, steep inclines.</p>
<p>Chevrolet Volt owners love their new cars. <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/electric-vehicles/charging-electric-vehicles/jackson-browne-chevrolet-volt/">Jackson Browne told me</a> that he has only used 8 gallons of gasoline during the 2,000 miles that he has driven his Chevrolet Volt. Jackson is famous as a singer, songwriter, and inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.</p>
<p>Felix Kramer and his wife own both a Chevrolet Volt and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/clean-fleet-articles/nissan-leaf-electric-car-price-review/" title="Nissan Leaf">Nissan Leaf</a></span>. They are delighted with both. During their ten trips to Lake Tahoe, they took the Volt for under 4-hour drives. The trips would have been overnight in their LEAF whose electric range would have required long stops for recharging. Their Volt has handled the snow. Cadillac, with extensive <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/2011-awd-4wd-mpg/" title="AWD">AWD</a></span> experience, has not made any AWD announcement for the Cadillac ELR.  Another Volt owner, Tom, is averaging 44 miles in electric mode, during his long commute to work.</p>
<p>Next year, you may get the chance to test drive the Cadillac of electric cars. Many won’t wait. The Volt is stylish, well appointed, and has the best OnStar app ever offered. The new Tesla Model S will offer luxury electric car buyers beautiful styling, roomy interior, and up to 300 miles of electric range. Fisker offers a dazzling sports coupe. The Cadillac ELR is likely to gain the enthusiastic following now enjoyed by the Volt and build on GM’s proven electric car success.</p>

<h2>SUV Drivers Can Now Get Over 40 MPG</h2>
<p>Ford is actively competing with Toyota to give crossover SUV buyers new record fuel-economy. Active families get passenger and cargo space and flexibility and the 5-seat, 5-door, 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid will compete head-to-head with the new larger <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/prius-v-test-drive-hybrid-suv-mpg/"><span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/hybrid-cars/prius-v-test-drive-hybrid-suv-mpg/" title="Prius v" target="_blank">Prius v</a></span> crossover SUV.<br />
</a></p>
<p>The new Ford C-MAX Energi takes fuel economy to the next level. Average trips will be in 100% electric mode using garage and public chargers. Longer trips in this new plug-in hybrid will engage a small gasoline engine to extend the range by hundreds of miles. The Ford C-MAX Energi will challenge the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/chevrolet-volt-test-drive-best-electric-car/" title="Chevrolet Volt">Chevrolet Volt</a></span> by supporting 5 passengers to the Volt’s 4 and by offering much more cargo flexibility. Both Ford C-MAX models go on sale in the U.S. in 2012.</p>
<p>Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and C-MAX Hybrid are based on the new Ford C-MAX five-passenger multi-activity vehicle, which has already gained over 100,000 new customers in Europe. Many times I saw this aerodynamic car gliding by on my recent trip to Spain. Both models are using new Ford lithium battery packs that are smaller and lighter.  Starting with 2013 models, all Ford hybrid and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span> will use lithium batteries. By 2013, Ford may be selling 100,000 cars per year with lithium batteries.</p>
<p>“C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid will be perfect for families looking to maximize their <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/hybrid-cars/" title="hybrid car">hybrid car</a></span> experience,” said Nancy Gioia, Ford director of Global Electrification. “Thanks to the versatile interior, these cars are going to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers who need room to grow.”</p>
<p>Ford proclaims the C-MAX to be a new category of multi-activity vehicles. Toyota proclaims the Prius V to be a new category of versitile vehicles. We call both small crossover SUVs because they have the passenger and cargo room and flexibility that people want when they buy a crossover. Speaking of versitility, Ford originally planned to give the U.S. C-MAX the sliding side doors that are popular in minivans, but decided not to be placed in the minivan category. Ford considered giving the C-MAX Hybrid 7-seats, but decided to leave that option for larger SUVs.</p>
<p>C-MAX Hybrid is targeted to deliver better fuel economy than the 41 mpg Ford Fusion Hybrid, the most fuel-efficient sedan in America today. It builds on the success of the critically acclaimed powersplit architecture Ford uses in its current hybrids, allowing it to operate in fuel-saving electric mode beyond 47 mph. The C-MAX Hybrid will use a third less fuel than the Ford Escape Hybrid, the current SUV mileage champion. Because the C-MAX only seats 5, some will insist on buying larger SUVs. Official EPA numbers have yet to be issued for the C-MAX Hybrid. They may or may not best the Toyota V 42 mpg combined rating.</p>
<p>In a powersplit hybrid, the electric motor and gasoline-powered engine can work together in blended mode or separately to maximize efficiency. The engine also can operate independently of vehicle speed, charging the batteries or providing power to the wheels as needed. The motor alone can provide sufficient power to the wheels in low-speed, low-load conditions, and work with the engine at higher speeds.</p>
<p>Both the C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid models will be built alongside the all-new 2012 Ford Focus and Focus Electric at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich. The plant’s production is powered in part by one of the largest <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/renewables/solar-energy-renewables/" title="solar energy" target="_blank">solar energy</a></span> generator systems in the state. The C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid vehicles sold in Europe in 2013 will be built at Ford’s plant in Valencia, Spain, starting in 2013.</p>
<h2>C-MAX Energi is Major Addition to Plug-in Hybrid Market</h2>
<p>Targeted to achieve AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) status, C-MAX Energi provides maximum fuel efficiency by pairing a high-voltage lithium-ion battery and electric traction motor with a high-efficiency Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. This allows it to run in electric mode before using the gasoline engine.</p>
<p>C-MAX Energi will offer more than 500 miles of overall driving range using the battery and engine – more than any other plug-in or extended-range electric vehicle. C-MAX Energi delivers better charge-sustaining fuel economy than Chevrolet Volt. Plug-in hybrid vehicles offer several benefits:</p>
<ul>
<li>    Electric driving range, perfect for emissions-free and silent city driving</li>
<li>    Potential consumer savings on energy and fuel costs thanks to improved fuel efficiency over a standard hybrid</li>
<li>    Reduced dependency on petroleum and increased energy independence</li>
<li>    Reduced environmental impact through reductions in greenhouse gas emissions</li>
<li>    Increased use of electricity from renewable energy sources (e.g. wind and solar), where available, for vehicle recharging</li>
</ul>
<p>“A plug-in hybrid owner may make fewer trips to the pump to refuel because of its all-electric mode capability,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford vice president of Global Product Development. “Conveniently, they’ll be able to recharge their plug-in hybrid at home overnight. And they’ll never have to think about the vehicle’s electric range, because the plug-in hybrid seamlessly shifts to fuel power when needed.”</p>
<p>The development of Ford’s first-ever production plug-in hybrid leverages more than 200,000 miles of road testing conducted in collaboration with a coalition of 10 utility companies, the U.S. Department of Energy, the New York State Energy Research and Development Administration and the Electric Power Research Institute.</p>
<h2>Ford’s Lithium Battery Advantage</h2>
<p>C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid will use advanced lithium-ion battery systems developed and assembled in-house by Ford in Michigan. Each system is smartly designed to maximize use of common, high-quality components, such as control board hardware that has proven field performance in Ford’s current, critically acclaimed hybrid vehicles.</p>
<p>Li-ion battery packs offer a number of advantages over the nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries that power today’s hybrid vehicles. In general, they are 25 to 30 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter, which makes them easier to package in a vehicle, and can be tuned to increase power to boost acceleration or to increase energy to extend driving distance.</p>
<p>While C-MAX Hybrid will operate much like today’s hybrid vehicles, C-MAX Energi will benefit from daily charging to maximize its all-electric range. Thanks to the efficiencies of its right-sized battery system, the plug-in hybrid easily recharges 100 percent overnight on a 120-volt outlet.</p>
<p>On start-up, C-MAX Energi will operate in charge-depletion mode, providing electric driving range. When the battery has been depleted or certain conditions are met, it switches to charge-sustaining blended hybrid mode for continued optimal fuel efficiency</p>
<h2>Smarter Dash</h2>
<p>C-MAX Energi owners will have access to a suite of driver information systems – on-board and off-board – designed to help them manage the recharge process, manage the most eco-friendly route on-board, remotely control their vehicle’s charge and preconditioning settings, monitor battery state of charge and maximize energy efficiency to extend use of electric mode. C-MAX Hybrid owners also will benefit from the on-board features.</p>
<p>Among these tools is a unique execution of MyFord Touch™ driver connect technology, especially for electrified driving. It offers exceptional configurability of vehicle information, including fuel level, battery power level, and average and instant miles per gallon. The cluster’s new MyView feature allows drivers to access even more vehicle data such as the electrical demands of vehicle accessories, including air conditioning, which influences fuel economy and the electric driving range of the C-MAX Energi.</p>
<p>The Brake Coach feature helps to educate drivers to optimize their use of the regenerative brakes to recapture kinetic energy and send it back to the battery, also reducing wear on the brakes.</p>
<h2>MyFord Mobile App</h2>
<p>MyFord Mobile enables access to a secure Ford website and smartphone/feature phone app to get instant vehicle status information, perform key functions remotely, monitor the car’s state of charge and current range, get various alerts including when the vehicle requires charging, remotely program charge settings and download vehicle data for analysis.</p>
<p>The feature also allows the owner to program the vehicle to use electricity from the grid to heat or cool the battery and cabin while plugged in. For example, during hot summer months, owners can preprogram the car the evening before to be fully charged – and fully cooled to a particular temperature – by a certain time the following morning. Users can also locate the vehicle with GPS, remotely start the vehicle, and remotely lock and unlock the car doors.</p>
<p>Working with MapQuest®, MyFord Mobile can communicate charge station and other points of interest to C-MAX Energi using SYNC’s Traffic, Directions and Information (TDI) service. Turn-by-turn guidance is provided by the in-car map-based Navigation System. Drivers can also get up-to-date charging station information in their vehicle directly through SYNC TDI simply by connecting to SYNC Services.</p>
<p>Using the value charging feature, powered by Microsoft, C-MAX Energi owners in North America will be able to optimize their home’s energy use and vehicle recharging practices. Value charging allows Ford customers to reduce their electricity costs by taking advantage of off-peak or reduced rates from their utility without a complicated set-up process.</p>
<h2>Ford Winning Globally</h2>
<p>C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid are two of at least 10 new models or derivatives that Ford will launch around the world based on its new global C-car platform – Ford’s first truly global One Ford platform.</p>
<p>Ford’s new generation of C-segment vehicles will be sold in more than 120 markets and will account for more than 2 million units annually. The C-segment accounts for one in four cars sold worldwide today and, in conjunction with the B-segment, is expected to rise to 50 percent of all cars sold globally by 2013.</p>
<p>The previous European C-MAX achieved a balance of enjoyable driving and comfort. The all-new model is set to take that performance to a new level, giving drivers a class-leading combination of responsive, sporty handling and overall refinement approaching the standards usually associated with larger, luxury vehicles.</p>
<p>Although Toyota sells 4 hybrids to each one from Ford, Ford is the #1 domestic producer of hybrids. Ford has over 140,000 hybrids on the roads.</p>
<p>C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid are two of five electrified vehicles that Ford will bring to the North American market during the next two years. In addition, the Ford Transit Connect Electric small commercial van, built in collaboration with Azure Dynamics, has close to 1,000 sales. A Ford insider told me that Ford will be presenting a Fusion Plug-in Hybrid at the Detroit Auto Show.</p>

This 4 GW didn’t take into account the projected extra 10% grid energy load caused by forecasted charging of <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span>. To put this in perspective, 4,000 MW is almost the SDG&amp;E peak demand on a hot summer day where 2,000 MW is the import transmission capacity. As an example, Sempra already recognizes the need for energy storage by adding 12 MW of energy storage to the 21 MW wind farm it recently purchased on Maui, HI.   If you are reading carefully you will have noticed that these numbers are power not energy. Typical projects call for sustaining the power level for 15 minutes to 4 hours depending on the primary purpose of the storage; with pumped-hydro energy storage, the time could be longer.</p>
<p>The 2020 target for renewable energy in California is 33%. Cal ISO (the California Interconnect System Operator) along with the three dominant IOUs (Investor Owned Utilities); PG&amp;E, Southern California Edison, and SDG&amp;E, have been having heartburn caused by high anxiety over grid stability at that high a level of intermittent non-dispatchable power. Traditional solutions of adding spinning reserve and peaker plants requires long lead times and is expensive both in the purchase price and the operation. These traditional approaches still lack the needed instantaneous response.</p>
<p>Government subsidies and regulation is already involved in the business of energy storage.  Last year, September 29, 2010, the governor signed into law AB2514 that requires the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to have hearings and set procurement targets for any load-serving entity to procure viable and cost effective energy storage systems. The first target is by the end of 2015 and the second is by the end of 2020.  The federal Storage 2010 Act of requested $1.5Billion in tax credits for energy storage added to the US Electric Grid. California Energy Commission (CEC) is spending $30million in grant funding for demonstration projects of renewable energy and energy storage.</p>
<p>For anybody who would like to sort out this business I highly recommend attending <a href="http://www.infocastinc.com/index.php/conference/508">STORAGE WEEK 2011</a> by Infocast, July 11 -14, 2011, Rancho Bernardo Inn, San Diego, CA. This is the fourth edition of this annual event and the previous three were sold out. I was fortunate to attend the last two years. “Market rules are changing… Global markets are heating up… Storage costs are dropping.”</p>
<p>Fleet operators will soon look at the payback of a short-range electric vehicle fleet powered by their own renewable energy and energy storage system. On the vehicle side, no oil or oil filter changes and brakes last up to 8 times as long. On the fuel side, imagine a wind and/or solar system at a fleet facility that grabs the energy when and where it’s available with an energy storage system that gives it to you when you want it and does not restrict your time of recharging or hit you for middle of the summer day “demand” charges. If the utility accesses 10% of a fleet’s energy storage system for voltage and frequency regulation, they could wind up paying you for the service. A good understanding of the products, applications, players, and rules of engagement will provide a competitive edge to future electric vehicle fleets.</p>

<p>A General Motors executive recently told a small group that GM is working on 32 <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric car">electric car</a></span> derivatives all based on Voltec, the <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/chevrolet-volt-test-drive-best-electric-car/" title="Chevrolet Volt">Chevrolet Volt</a></span>’s electric drive system. Voltec is GM’s architecture and roadmap for a number of exciting vehicles future vehicles with electric drive systems. This Voltec Propulsion System was formerly called the E-Flex architecture.</p>
<p>Voltec can accommodate an electric drive system that uses a small engine coupled with an electric generator, such as today’s Chevrolet Volt in America, and the similar Opel Ampera for Europe and Japan.  If it made economic sense, the engine could be a diesel in Europe, or natural gas in Latin America. Engine and generator could be replaced with a fuel cell. GM could even produce a pure battery-electric like the <a title="Nissan Leaf" href="../clean-fleet-articles/nissan-leaf-electric-car-price-review/">Nissan Leaf</a>.</p>
<p>Clean Fleet Report is betting on a Buick plug-in hybrid and a pure battery electric car to be announced in the coming months. The Buick will more likely be parallel hybrid configuration. We are also betting that many derivatives in research and development will never be commercialized. Some will depend on battery breakthroughs that deliver more energy from less space and vehicle weight. The Voltec Propulsion System could drive something bigger like an Equinox, or fit in something smaller like a Cruze.</p>
<p>You won’t see the same Volt&#8217;s electric motor and battery-pack in a Chevrolet Tahoe or Silverado; the vehicles are too heavy. But we already see 40-foot electric buses and series hybrids. GM Vice President Research and Development in an <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle.aspx?AR=248970">interview with AutoCar</a> last year stated, “With battery technology as it currently stands, extended-range vehicles that are larger than the Volt — luxury saloons, trucks and SUVs — aren’t really possible; they would simply be too heavy to be efficient. For those types of cars, fuel cells and biofuels are the future. Ironically enough, the E-REV powertrain won’t really package in a much smaller car than the Volt, either. So expect them all to be between four and five meters long.”</p>
<h2>Future Batteries Could Deliver 30 to 50 Percent More</h2>
<p>New battery technology, however, is promising more energy with less weight and vehicle size. To advance its lithium batteries, GM Ventures invested $7 million in Newark, Calif.-based Envia Systems to provide GM’s battery engineering team with access to advanced lithium-ion cathode technology that delivers higher cell energy density and lower cost. In a separate agreement, GM has secured the right to use Envia’s advanced cathode material for future GM electrically driven vehicles.  If successful, Envia could produce 30% to 50% better storage per weight. <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/electric-vehicles/batteries/gm-lithium-battery-envia/">GM Envia Report</a>.</p>
<p>When I interviewed GM executives last year, they planned to sell 8,000 to 10,000 Volts in 2011. Exciting <a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/plug-in-hybrids/chevrolet-volt-test-drive-best-electric-car/">Volt test drives</a> and soaring gas prices have caused a surge of demand from your neighbor down the street, rental car companies, and giant global fleets such as General Electric.</p>
<p>For a platform appropriate for larger trucks and SUVs, GM has invested in Bright Automotive. For a future of personal vehicles for urban mobility, GM is experimenting with the EN-V built on a Segway platform. For now, look for the action in C and B platform vehicles.</p>
<p>The Volt is an electric vehicle that offers a total driving range of 379 miles, based on EPA estimates.  For the first 35 miles, the Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe-free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery.  When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 344 miles on a full change.</p>
<h2>60,000 Chevrolet Volts for 2012</h2>
<p><a class="highslide" onclick="return vz.expand(this)" href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Volt-Assembly.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2291" title="Chevrolet Volt Assembly" src="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Volt-Assembly-300x210.jpg" alt="Chevrolet Volt Assembly" width="300" height="210" /></a>General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, home of the Chevrolet Volt, will close for four weeks beginning in June for planned upgrades to prepare for a significant increase in the rate of Volt production, along with assembly of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan.</p>
<p>Already in tight supply, the number of Volts available for delivery to retail customers will be further restricted over the next three months before production resumes and the Volt and the Opel Ampera begin being exported to Europe and China.</p>
<p>“The Volt will be available to customers nationwide by the end of 2011,” said Cristi Landy, director of Chevrolet Volt Marketing.  The 2011 Volt was launched in California, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia and Washington, D.C.  But Volt orders have poured in from 48 states. The Volt will be available nationwide and in Europe, China and Canada by the end of this year.</p>
<p>As a result of the plant upgrades, planned Volt and Ampera production capacity this year will increase to 16,000 units, including exports and a fleet of several hundred demonstration units sent to U.S. dealers.  In 2012, global production capacity is expected to be 60,000 vehicles with an estimated 45,000 to be delivered in the United States.</p>
<p>“Drivers do not have to compromise,” observes Byron Shaw, General Motors, Managing Director, Advanced Technology.  He has already driven his Volt across the U.S. twice. He sited driving 80 miles round trip from San Francisco to Stanford University as an example. In his Volt, he drives down the freeway without range anxiety. Should the battery deplete, the gasoline engine engages. For the same trip in my <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/clean-fleet-articles/nissan-leaf-electric-car-price-review/" title="Nissan Leaf">Nissan Leaf</a></span>, I only used the freeway for half the trip, driving 65 in the right lane to save electrons. I drove the other half on city streets where range is much better. Not only did I avoid running the AC, for the most part, I kept the fan off. Plug-in hybrid convenience versus pure-electric gasoline free.</p>
<p>For extending range, I look for a charging station. In the future, I will also look for DC Fast Charging stations where I can get up to another 80 miles in 20 minutes. The Volt does not have a fast charge option and does not need one. Another 300 miles of range is available at the nearest gas station. To reach a broad market, GM will ultimately offer a variety of plug-in hybrids and <span class='wp_keywordlink'><a href="http://www.cleanfleetreport.com/category/electric-cars/" title="electric cars" target="_blank">electric cars</a></span> to meet various customer needs. GM’s future is increasingly electric.</p>
