2020 All-Electric Motorcycle

If you like your motorcycles fast and quiet, then check-out the all-new 2020 LiveWire, as Harley-Davidson announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that it is taking pre-orders for its first production electric motorcycle, for fall 2019 deliveries.

With a clutch-free design, the LiveWire will appeal to those that have reservations about being able to master the shifting of a conventional motorcycle. For the seasoned cyclist, 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds should be intriguing as will the low center of gravity for agile handling and easier balancing when stopped. For all riders, the LiveWire will be silent, smooth and free of most vibrations usually associated with a conventionally-powered bike.

The instant torque of the electric motor is always available at any speed. Harley-Davidson puts the driving range at 110 miles, but this can be enhanced by conservative riding and the ABS system, where energy is returned to the battery when braking or coasting.

Connected as Well as Electric

The LiveWire will be the most connected motorcycle from Harley-Davidson. It will be equipped with the HD Connect Service that, through an on-board LTE-enabled Telematics Control Unit, will show the owner battery charge status and range, plus charging station locations. The system will also show where the LiveWire is parked and will send alerts if the bike has been tampered with. There is also GPS-enabled tracking if the LiveWire is stolen as well as service reminders and notifications.

Pricing starts at $29,799. As Matt Levatich, Harley-Davidson’s President and CEO says: “This next chapter in our history is about creating products and opportunities for existing and aspiring riders….and represents the future of Harley-Davidson.”

Other electric motorcycles are already out there, but the arrival of an electric Harley does signal a new era for two-wheelers.
