Range Is Up; New Tech
Half a decade ago Nissan jumped to the front of the mainstream electric vehicle market with the release of the Leaf EV. Now, after the first generation Leaf has started to age and more competitors have appeared, Nissan is finally updating its EV offering.
Announced via Twitter last week, Nissan confirmed that its second generation (2018) Leaf will debut in September at an event prior to the Tokyo Motor Show.
Not much is known about the second generation Leaf, as Nissan has done a good job keeping any information close to the vest. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn did confirm that the second generation Leaf will feature the company’s ProPilot (self-driving) technology.
It is rumored that the new model will be available with two battery sizes, much like Tesla does with its models. The Leaf will most likely be available with the smaller battery size first, followed by the larger battery pack which should offer over 200 miles of range. This is much like what Leaf had done in the past, offering the 24 kWh battery pack (84-mile range) alongside the 107-mile 20 kWh battery.
Despite holding the title of the best-selling EV in the world’, the new Leaf will find immediate competition with the Chevrolet Bolt, which will be available nationwide in August and upcoming Tesla Model 3, which will begin production in July as the company hopes to start deliveries on its almost 400,000 orders. The Leaf’s market leadership may help keep Nissan on top.
The 2018 Leaf is expected to go on sale by the end of 2017, but no official date has yet been confirmed.
